Held By Hope: Eliya Cohen & Ziv Abud

No words can describe what we experienced together in Leah Posluns Theatre on March 26, 2026. We were changed.

As Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud shared their story to a sold out crowd, the only word that comes to mind is ‘SHOCK’. Not only from the magnitude of depravity and violence they both endured, but shocked by the strength, faith, and determination to survive. Eliya mentioned that his ‘WHY’ kept him alive during his 505 days in Gaza captivity - to see his mother, celebrate Shabbat with his family, and put on Tfillin once more. For 505 days, Eliya thought that Ziv had been murdered, but Ziv survived the impossible and chose to work tirelessly to share her story in hopes of bringing Eliya home. She couldn’t even confirm was alive, but her faith compelled her to travel the world, to gather support for hostage release.

The candid, emotional, and detailed conversation brought tears to those seated in disbelief within our theatre. Never Again is a phrase we have used for over 80 years, but still, in this generation, we see the horrors that humans can inflict. October 7th is now engrained in Jewish history. Eliya and Ziv carry this burden with strength beyond compare, sharing their story as far and wide as can be. Moments matter, and each moment is an opportunity to change the world. The story of Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud ended with an engagement and warm embraces. We hope their future is as bright as their spirit. Am Yisrael Chai!

We are changed, forever.
